Jumping Rivers is an analytics company whose passion is data and machine learning. We help our clients move from data storage to data insights.

The company has three key strands: training, data engineering and machine learning consultancy.

We are based in Newcastle Upon Tyne in the Catalyst Building - home to the National Innovation Centre for Data. But half the company is remote. We trust our team to manage their own time. If you want to go for a run in the afternoon and work later, that's fine with us!

If you are based near Newcastle, then you can come into our office.

Job Description

Location: Role is remote, but located in Newcastle upon Tyne is preferable.

The Junior Engineer is responsible for helping to deploy, configure, and maintain data science software, e.g., Posit, for Jumping Rivers' clients across cloud and on-premise environments. The role combines hands-on infrastructure delivery with ongoing technical support, helping to ensure client systems are deployed to a high standard and remain stable, secure, and performant once live. You will work closely with clients and the wider Engineering team to deliver reliable infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

Deployment - 35%

  • Support the deployment and configuration of data science software for new clients across AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premise environments

  • Assist with provisioning infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible)

  • Help configure authentication, SSO, and access control integrations (e.g., LDAP, SAML, OAuth)

  • Assist with networking, security, and compliance configurations (e.g., VPCs, firewalls, SSL/TLS)

  • Keep deployment architecture and configuration documentation up to date

Support & Maintenance - 50%

  • Respond to and help resolve first line support tickets, escalating more complex issues as needed

  • Monitor system health, performance, and availability across client deployments

  • Apply patches, upgrades, and version updates to data science software and underlying infrastructure

  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure, networking, and application-level issues

  • Escalate and coordinate with third party support where required

Client Liaison - 10%

  • Act as a technical point of contact for clients on deployment and support matters

  • Help gather infrastructure requirements for new deployments in collaboration with clients

  • Communicate technical issues, fixes, and maintenance work clearly to non-technical stakeholders

  • Support onboarding of new clients onto systems

Internal Collaboration & Process Improvement - 5%

  • Contribute to internal tooling, automation, and documentation to make deployments faster and more repeatable

  • Share knowledge with the wider Engineering team on deployment best practice and recurring issues

Preferred Experience

Academic Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience

Skills and Experience:

Technical Skills

Essential

  • Some exposure to DevOps, infrastructure, or systems engineering (through study, projects, internships, or work experience)

  • Basic familiarity with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP)

  • Awareness of Infrastructure-as-Code concepts (Terraform, Ansible, or similar)

  • Comfortable navigating Linux environments

  • Basic understanding of networking fundamentals (DNS, load balancing, VPNs, firewalls)

  • Methodical troubleshooting skills

Desirable

  • Any exposure to deploying or administering data science software

  • Familiarity with R and/or Python ecosystems

  • Basic exposure to containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes)

  • Some scripting experience (Bash, Python) for automation

  • Awareness of monitoring/observability tooling (Zabbix, Grafana or similar)

Soft Skills

  • Interest in working in a consultancy or client-facing environment

  • Good communication skills, with the ability to explain things clearly and ask questions when unsure

  • Able to manage a small number of tasks or requests at once, with support prioritising

  • Shows initiative and takes ownership of assigned tasks

  • Reliable in seeing individual pieces of work through to completion, with guidance available
