Data Science Instructor

Jumping Rivers is hiring!

Jumping Rivers is an analytics company whose passion is data and machine learning. We help our clients move from data storage to data insights.

The company has three key strands: training, data engineering and machine learning consultancy. As a small company, the roles are rarely clear cut. We think this is a good thing; the team get to experience different ideas and concepts, never stuck on mundane tasks.

We are based in Newcastle upon Tyne in the Catalyst Building - home to the National Innovation Centre for Data. But half the company is remote (within the UK). We trust our team to manage their own time. If you want to go a run in the afternoon and work later, that's fine with us!

If you are based near Newcastle, then you can come into our office.

Job Description

We are currently looking to expand our training and consultancy team.

Location: Remote, but within the UK. We expect that post-Covid we will start on-site training again. This would involve travel to London or Edinburgh.

The exact responsibilities depends on experience. If you are at the beginning of your career, we will provide the space, support and tools to develop your skills. For those with more experience, then we would expect you to take the lead on developing new courses and interacting directly with clients.

  • Training: On average two to three days of training per week.
  • Consultancy: Helping client projects.

We like to give the team flexibility to manage their time. This means if you want to take the morning off for a run, and work later in the day. That's fine by us.

Technical duties:

  • Running training courses. Initially online, but eventually on-site
  • Depending on the applicant, assit, or lead on client projects.

The following is to give you a flavour of how Jumping Rivers runs internally. If you have never used these tools, don't worry, we can teach you.

Almost everyone uses Linux, from the Admin team to the data scientists. We all use GitLab. Our main languages are R & Python.

Informal enquiries: If you would like an informal chat about this role, then feel free to email us at

Deadline: 2021/09/30. We will accept applications for a short period after this date. But we anticipate interviewing around then.

Preferred Experience

For a junior position, we would expect a little R or Python knowlege, e.g. what's covered in a standard degree.

If you don't have training experience, then please indicate talks and other public roles you've had.

Recruitment Process

Step 1: Informal chat with two of the team. This is a private discussion and does not form any part of the interview process. Instead, it allows you to ask questions about how we work.

Step 2: Technical discussion. This will last around an hour and will focus on a Shiny app you've created

Step 3: Final chat with the CEO.
